Christmas Lights in Arcadia Will Shine-- Just Not This Year
Last week, Fox 10 reporter Kari Lake alerted us to a developing story in Arcadia. One of our residents, Lee Sepanek, known throughout the area as “Christmas Lee” was told by City of Phoenix staff that the amazing display of Christmas lights he’s been putting on for over 30 years now would be shut down due to a couple of complaints.
City staff didn’t even bother to alert our office before meeting with Mr. Sepanek. That alone was wrong. But trying to shut down Christmas? Totally unacceptable!
As soon as the story broke, our office was there to meet with Mr. Sepanek, then arrange follow up conversations with City staff to ensure that Christmas Lee and his lights can continue to shine for as long as he’s willing to keep the spirit of Christmas alive.
Unfortunately, that won’t happen this year. Lee typically spends two full months putting together his display, and after being told by the City that he would be doing all that work only to likely get shut down, he decided it wouldn’t be worth the risk. Our office even offered to gather volunteers to assist, but it was too late.
There is a bit of good news, however: Lee couldn’t quite abandon the Christmas spirit entirely, and his lights are now decorating several other houses in the neighborhood – just one more reminder of how we can all use the holidays to come together in celebration, no matter how we choose to celebrate.
And Lee says the display will be back on next year – and better than ever!
